Whitehorse Diesel - LNG Conversion Project
The Whitehorse Diesel - LNG Conversion Project involved the installation of two natural gas fired generating units to replace two existing diesel generating units at Yukon Energy Corporation’s Whitehorse Thermal Generating Station, located within the municipal boundaries of Whitehorse, Yukon.
Yukon Energy Corporation awarded the project management contract to Allnorth in October 2013. The scope of work encompassed LNG truck offloading, the LNG storage tanks, vaporization, the send out pump, and two natural gas generators producing 8.8 MW of electricity to a localised substation.
Incorporated into the design was a small office type facility at the truck offloading point, a fire protection water system and the capacity to expand the system to a third generator plus two additional LNG storage tanks.
Design, procurement and permitting phases were completed in 2014. Construction took place over the 2014/15 winter season and into summer of 2015. During this phase Allnorth was responsible for managing the design consultant, the YEC internal engineering team, plus the construction involving eight contractors and major suppliers. The schedule and logistics proved challenging with materials and equipment procured from Europe, China, USA and Canada.
This LNG fueled power plant is one of the first of its kind in Canada.
